A day to remember; Tony Hyde Shield 2023

Braving the weather

A fresh breeze and a wet morning welcomed the ten teams from the club to play for the first

club trophy of the season. We played Australian Triples rules over ten ends. Every team

member played three ends each as a lead, a two and a skip, which made for an entertaining

morning! A number of members (who shall remain nameless) were just a little bit confused at various times during each game.

After two games in the rain, we were all treated to a buffet lunch and a chance to draw breath, before continuing into the afternoon session. Vicky put on a wonderful spread, with a little help from her friends.

The afternoon session

Once the rain ceased, the sun shone - albeit for a short while - and teams completed their four matches. with the top two teams playing each other in the final.

The team of Alan Vickery, Martina Garfield and Jenny Williams got off to a great start; they held their lead until the tenth and last end against John Wright, Mike Turnbull and Mike Dolling with a two shot lead 10-8.

The winning shot?

For the first time in the match the team of Wright, Turnbull and Dolling then turned in a great last end to win the trophy by one shot 11-10.

An excellent game played with good humour throughout. It was pleasing to have a complete newcomer Mike Dolling in the winning team.

My personal thanks to all who supported and participated in the event over the day, to Mal and Chris for their work behind the scenes with the bar and teas, to John Amos for the photos, to Vicky for the lunch, to Anne, Cath and Dee in helping with all the food.

Thanks also to Jim for ringing the bell at the start of each game and last but not least to all 30 playing members for making it such a special occasion.
