Match report, week ending 10th June

Over 55s at home to Portishead, 6th Jun

We had a very close win against Portishead by seven shots. It was a surprise to me because I thought they would be strong for us, so what do I know? We won on four rinks and lost on two.

The rink of the day goes to Rob Saddler and his team, It was his first outing as skip in the over 55's, so very well done. Dave Allen had his first game for the over 55's and I hope he enjoyed the experience, because enjoyment is the aim, win or lose.

My thanks go to Jim Purvis who was a late replacement. The scores were 98 Banwell - 91 Portishead, points are Banwell16 - Portishead 4. We have now won 4 games and lost 2 so well done to everyone

Allan Shattock, Over 55s captain

A team home to Nailsea A, 8th June

It was a slightly chilly but sunny day for the latest league fixtures this week. The A Team were home to Nailsea whilst the B team took on Yatton away.

The home green was pretty fast this week, possibly a little too fast for some, as both Barry Taylor's and Allan Shattock's rinks went down by 9 and 12 respectively, after decent starts on all three rinks.

Better news on Phil Villis's rink where a mid-game comeback scare was averted, when they pulled away again and held onto a three shot victory.

Result 51-69 defeat (2-10) in points

John Wright

B team Away to Yatton, 8th June

A loss of 68-54 doesn't tell the full story. We won on one rink and lost on the other two. Most of the rinks took a while to work out the lines on a heavy and challenging green. It wasn't until the 5th end that we even registered a single point.

The shout out this week goes to skip Terry Byrnes, assisted ably by Gerry Bean and Mike Bass who came from 8-0 down to win by 4 shots; we didn't come back completely empty handed.

Mixed friendly at home to Severn Vale, 9th June.

We made use of our famous L-shaped green by playing across, and I must say it bowled really well.

Bowling across, the road in the background by John A

Player of the day was Angela Merchant on John Wright's rink, who bowled superbly.

Severn Vale certainly enjoyed themselves and have promised to try to arrange a return friendly at their place. Captain Keith gave a good joke, but only after being under instruction not to tell his original joke by his wife.

Everyone was left waiting to dine by a full three ends left still to play on a chatty rink, but played in a tremendously friendly way. It was a win on 3 rinks and a loss on the chatty one, giving a result 68-54 to Banwell.

The umbrella competition, 10th June

A good turn out on a slightly chilly night of 22 people. A big thank you to Mike Turnbull, who organised everything without the umbrella sheets and numbers. He did a sterling job given, a certain VC left them at home!

From this week onwards, the umbrella results sheet is on the website here, and also on the Spaces app. The standings remain unchanged, with new boy Dave Allen leading the way from John Amos and Martina Garfield (the lady who managed to stab herself!) respectively.

Mike Nickson, vice captain
