Over 55s at home to Ashcombe Templars, 6th Aug
We had a captain when I was a member at Victoria; when he got up to speak after the game he always said, "Well what can I say?". I must say I feel a bit like that now, losing to a side we had already beaten by a substantial margin, who are currently second from the bottom.
Our next game is against Clevedon Prom who are second from the top. It doesn't bode well, with our poor result against Ashcombe, and just goes to show how unpredictable bowls is.
We did have one outstanding rink - that of Terry Byrnes - winning by 10 clear shots. Well done to your rink.
Hillary's rink is worthy of a mention, as he was the only other winning rink. Most of the other rinks lost by three or less shots, with one rink going down quite heavily.
The scores were Banwell 87 shots, Ashcombe 89 shots, so very close on shots. Points were different - Banwell 4, Ashcombe 16.
Hey Ho! My rink lost but we all enjoyed the afternoon. I hope the rest of you did because that's why we play bowls.
So well-done to you all.

Ladies' friendly away against Nailsea, 6th Aug
As we don’t get out much, Banwell ladies played an extra fixture on Tuesday.
Two teams of 4 set off for a return friendly against Nailsea, where we were very warmly welcomed. It was lovely to meet up with some familiar faces and we had a good afternoon in brilliant sunshine.
There were some significant wins/losses on both rinks, fortunately one for each club. After having the edge for most of the match, Banwell lost overall by just one shot. However, it couldn’t have mattered less … we had a great afternoon, with good company, followed by tea and cake!

NSBA Knockout cup home to St Andrews, 8th Aug
The match was conceded by St Andrews after being unable to raise a team, giving us a free pass into the final, which is on Sunday 25th August against Clevedon (Top) at West Backwell.
Rinks Day, Sunday 11th Aug
Firstly, thanks to all those that stepped in to fill the slots made vacant by members who couldn't play. Special thanks go to Wendy Coleman who was playing, not playing, was playing etc - you get the picture - and then had to endure playing with a miserable old git.....
Secondly, hats off to Mal and Chris, as always. First in and last out with my good self on a very long hot day. Stars the pair of them.
Lastly, thanks to all those that played. Hopefully, everyone enjoyed the day (apart from the miserable git). This was summed up by a message I received from Bob Grant:
"Mike, I just wanted to say how much we appreciated your hard work in organising and controlling today. Our first Rinks day (hope there are many more) making it a truly memorable day. From us both, Bob n Janis."
On to the matches. There were two leagues, with the winner of each playing each other for the cup. It ended up with Harold Clarke's team v John Wright's team in the final. The battle for the wooden spoon was fought between my team and Mike Bass. Well done Mike on your victory!
The final looked to be heading firmly in Harold's favour, until team John woke up with a few ends to go and raced back into the game. They ended up losing 17-16, after being a country mile behind, and only then on a measure on the last end.
So congratulations to winners Harold Clarke, Janis Grant, Brian Davis and John Rickerty, and runners up John Wright, Sean White, John Amos and Paul Wilfan.
And finally....
I know you are all wondering who the miserable git is. Hands up Guv, it's a fair cop. It was me!
