Match report, week ending 15th July

Turnbull Cup, round 4 home to Nailsea, 9th July

Our journey ended in defeat by the narrowest of margins, with a score of 63-62. A tie and we would have won, as we succeeded with the extra end win on Hillary's rink.

Wins on 3 of the 4 rinks normally would be enough, but a very strong Nailsea rink wrapped up enough points to pip us at the post. A decent run ends but we can be proud of our efforts.

Thanks to all who took part.

Ladies' Triples Day, Clevedon Prom, 9th July

The ladies lost their first match 3- 12, with the rain holding off.

In the second match, the score was 6-6, then on the last end, the opposition gained a 4 🙀. It had started raining during the proceedings but, luckily, lunch was waiting, with the thought of a cream tea to come.

The score against Chepstow in the next match was 5-2, and the final match was a draw at 5-5

Well done ladies!

Over 55's at home to Victoria Vikings, 10th July

It was a stressful morning caused by a selected player calling off on the morning of our match with Victoria Vikings. We had no reserves - we had 35 male members; I know for various reasons players can't play on a given day. I would ask you to put your name in as unavailable, rather than cry off on the morning of the match. Some of you may feel that you are not good enough to play. Let selection make that decision!

We all at times feel unhappy with the decisions selection makes. Please take your grievance up with them, and not with me when on the green playing bowls; I haven't any input into the over 55's selection, that is my CHOICE. Moan over.

We had a great result against The Vikings, winning 13 shots. The weather was kind and the green ran well, although on rink 2 there was something that made the woods bounce, but didn't interfere with our enjoyment.

The star rink this week was Alan Vickery's and his merry men, winning by 15 shots 25 - 10. Trevor Garfield's rink deserves a mention as this rink was affected the most by the troubles earlier, and still won by 20 shots to 13.

My special thanks go to Martin Brand for stepping in at the last minute. If he hadn't, we would have dropped a rink ,lost 10 shots and five players wouldn't have had a game.

The scores were Banwell 112 shots, Victoria 99, winning on four rinks and dropping two rinks. The points awarded were Banwell 16, Victoria 4.

My thanks to all who played.

'A' team away to Clarence Park, 13th July

A lovely warm afternoon by the seaside saw the A team visiting Clarence Park to take on a high-flying Clarence side.

Phil Villis's rink won by a very decent seven shots, whilst Allan Shattock steered his side to a tidy 18-18 draw, Chris Wilson's rink didn't fare quite so well, going down by five points to some ridiculously accurate lead straight bowls from Clarence's Martin Ford.

Overall result 9-3 to Clarence (53-61)

B team away to Clevedon Prom C, 13th July

The B team travelled to the seaside as well at Clevedon Prom, but had a bit of a mare, losing on all three rinks. Mac Kirby went down by nine shots whilst Mike Bass lost by ten.

Alan Vickery managed a creditable draw 20-20 but we had to concede 25% through only fielding three players due to Paul Wilfan breaking his arm on Friday.

Overall result 12-0 defeat (71-37)

North Somerset Mixed League, away to Nailsea, 14th July

It was a lovely day with great company on a good green. What more can you ask for! Fittingly for Captain Wayne, the points were shared 9 apiece as both our teams won a leg and lost a leg.

The special shout out this week goes to young Leo Biddlecombe, grandson of a very proud Alan Vickery. Playing in his first match, the youngster held his own and played some great shots to boot.

Well done Leo.

The umbrella competition, week 9, 8th July

This week's rain-affected umbrella saw a hardy ten people play in relatively dry conditions, given the recent downpours. The draw, assisted by Herr Cochayne, threw together some odd rinks and player positions.

Dave A is still being hunted by the ladies but managed to break the 100 point barrier. Angela M leapt into second spot in a tight battle with Martina and Wendy.

Next week is the tenth leg of the umbrella competition and, as such, afterwards players can drop a low score week as it's their ten best results that count.
