Match report, week ending 1st July

Ladies Triples Day at Nailsea 25th Jun

The ladies arrived at a sunny Nailsea for a fun, but tiring day of bowling. Our first match was against Victoria Park B, a Bristol team with a demon skip! We played quite well, but the opposing skip knocked out each of our winning woods and we we lost 18-1 to the better team.

Mopping our brows....

It was warming up and we were glad to have a sit down in the shade.

After scoffing an early lunch in an attempt to improve our chances, we faced the Bowling Stones - good name! - from Portishead RBL in the next match. It was close fought, but we won 4-3.

In need of extra sustenance due to the heat, we went in search of coffee and biscuits, as well as forensically examining the raffle table for winning tickets - with no luck. Never mind - back to the bowling.

Match 3 saw us suffer a narrow defeat at the hands of the Pandas on rink 6, where the woods misbehaved all over the rink, many of them ending up on rink 5! It was frustrating and exhausting work and we could see that everyone was starting to suffer in the heat.

We were a wee bit tired.......

However, after strawberries and cream AND cake, we felt better and ready to face our final match against The Spritzers from Long Ashton.

We were on rink 2 which, after being played on continuously for 7 hours in hot sunshine, was playing like glass. Woods went off the back of the rink on most ends, the worst being a line of 9.

The final score was 8-3 to the Spritzers - a competitive game, which was lost on the final 2 ends. Thanks Sue and Ang B for a sterling effort and a lovely day.

NSBA Knockout Cup at home to Portishead, 25th June

A fine 84-47 win saw us progress to the next round.

Wins on three of the rinks skipped by Chris Wilson, Alan Shattock and Paul Villis and a tight loss on Alan Vickery's rink.

Well done - on to the next round.

Over 55s at home to Nailsea, 27th June

We suffered another negative result, this time at the hands of Nailsea. We were completely out-played on a couple of rinks - they went down by 27 shots.

John Wright's rink was again the top rink winning by 18 shots. We won on another rink by one shot and drew on another.

We have an opportunity to make amends when we play in the reverse fixture in a month's time.

The scores were 100 shots to Banwell,115 shots to Nailsea, points awarded are, 5 points to Banwell, 15 points to Nailsea.

Next week we play against Victoria Vikings: let's hope we can repeat the result we had at the Vic.

Well done to all who played, and I hope you all enjoyed the game.

Thanks

'A' team at home to Clevedon Prom, 29th June (No B team game)

We were leading by nine shots with five ends to play, then saw a drop of six, one and a three on the penultimate end, which resulted in a last end shoot out where John Wright's team held their nerve and gained the win.

The match of the day performance went to Phil Villis's team with an amazing 59-5 win. On their way a Hot Shot was collected! Hats off to Trevor Burnett, Lee Pheasant, Paul Aldus and Phil Villis.

Alan's team went down, but the A team picked up another 10 points in a 90-48 win.

Mixed friendly away to Yatton, 30th June.

The umbrella competition, 1st July

We had 18 attend, including for the first time playing new member Richard King. Welcome to our club.

Dave Allen stands aloft still, followed by a right old fight for second spot between Wendy, Jan, Martina and Angela. I've just realised lucky Dave is being chased by four women!

Jim Purvis is doing well after a failed cart wheel. Doctors for him today.
