Match report, week ending 22nd July

Serious business during the Triples final

Ladies' Triples Day, Portishead, 16th July

The Belles and the Babes headed for Portishead to what was an enjoyable, if not totally successful day. Both greens were in use, so the two teams spent the morning on the top green and the afternoon on the bottom.

The Babes, led by Kim with Jenny and Angela M, lost all four matches, although a couple were a close second.

The Belles fared slightly better with one win by skip Wendy and teammates Janis, and Jane Andrews, a Banwell friend from St Andrews; she jumped in at the last minute to cover for Sue who was poorly. By coincidence, one of their four matches was against St Andrews - the Belles won.

Thanks to all players for a lovely day.

Parrott shield, at home to Winscombe, 17th July

A lead of 6 points from the first leg and good wins on two of the 5 rinks wasn't quite enough to get the shield back at Banwell. We lost overall by 9 shots, a much tighter affair than last year.

Congratulations to Winscombe who battled hard for their win.

Over 55's Knockout Cup, away to Wedmore, 19th July

It was a very close result in the over 55's K.O. Cup. We all did our best; we may not have played as well as we could have, but we all did our best on a hot afternoon.

We lost by only four shots, scores being Wedmore 107 shots, to 104 to Banwell, winning on three rinks - we could say '' if only '' but there's no profit in that so we won't.

Like many bowlers, I say a match is won or lost on how well the leads play, which was certainly the case on my rink. John R took a few ends to get his weight sorted out, and we were trailing and making no impression on the score, then he got his weight sorted and was getting into the head with some very good woods. This made the rest of us get our act together, and we ran out winning by ten shots. This was not as well as Rob Saddler, whose rink won by thirteen shots - well done.

Thanks to you all for playing, and well done on a very trying afternoon. I look forward to seeing you next Thursday 25th against Winscombe.

Banwell Bowling Club Triples Competition, 20th and 21st July

A wet and grim Saturday saw 27 hardy players battle on through the day. The first stage in the morning saw three mini leagues battling for a place in the afternoon session.

Terry Coleman set the proceedings going with the customary bell, whilst Wendy managed the teas and coffees. Chris had an awfully long day managing the bar. Thanks to you all once again.

The morning's results

In league 1, John Amos's team looked dead and buried going into their final game but pulled off a 10-2 win and eliminated Terry Byrne's team securing 2nd spot. Top spot went to Harold Clarke's team by virtue of a greater leg tally.

League 2 was a much more straightforward set of results, with Hillary's team winning top spot, followed by Mal and his merry crew. Harry Woodard's team were the team to depart.

In league 3, all teams won one a match apiece, but a heavy loss saw Alan Vickery's team eliminated on points against. Rob Saddler and John Wright's teams went through to the semi finals.

The afternoon's results

The rain continued into the afternoon and the two semi final leagues mustered on.

League one was a winner takes all finale between Harold Clarke.s and John Wright's teams, with John coming through 7-6. Mal's team couldn't quite get going in the poor conditions and went out.

In League 2, unfortunately Hillary was forced to concede as he was suffering from pins and needles in his bowling hand and couldn't grip his woods. This resulted in Rob Saddler and John Amos playing for the final appearance. It went Rob's way in a tight 6-3 win; they ended up group winners on 6 points.

The triples final, Sunday 21st

In complete contrast to the previous day's weather, sunshine and blue skies greeted the two teams and spectators. The match was played in a great atmosphere and the bowling quality on offer was very high. It went all the way to the last end with the scores tied at 13 all.

Lee Bean on Rob's team had squeezed a wood right on the jack and, despite every effort, it could not be dislodged. The result was 14-13 to Rob Saddler, Lee Bean and Dave Allen against runners up John Wright, Mac Kirby and Rob Taylor.

Triples winners 2024

A special shout out to Jim Purvis and Rob Taylor. The Saturday wasn't pleasant, but both players gave their all, with Jim missing out on a final spot by one single shot and Rob playing a blinder all day.

Thanks to all who took part and 'spectatored'.

The umbrella competition, week 10, 15th July

A sunny evening saw 25 players have a good time.

It was really good to see Mike Turnbull return to the green, and win his rink too. Dave Allen still leads the pack but the ladies are closing in, with Angela only 11 points behind. She is now followed closely by Wendy and Martina.

And, in other news..

There is a problem with the wireless internet access in the clubhouse at the moment. The service went down over a week ago. John W has spent hours on the phone trying to find out what happened. BT were no help, and thought we had cancelled our own contract after 2 weeks' service!

John did some detective work - it turns out that the club is registered as the same address as part of the building with the green windows that borders our car park. When our line was installed, BT cut off the phone line to the house, as 2 lines are not allowed at one address.

The family in the house transferred the contract to another provider, incurring a very large penalty, the bill for which was sent to us.....

Nightmare!

Fortunately, John has sorted it all out. We should be up and running again in a couple of weeks, once the Post Office has agreed that our address is The Pond, West Street, Banwell.
