Match report, week ending 8th July

Updated: Jul 12

Firstly, before we begin with this week's report can we all wish Mike Turnbull a speedy return to the fold.

Wishing you well Mr T.

Turnbull Cup, round 3 away to Congresbury, 2nd July

The week started with a difficult away match in the Turnbull Cup to Congresbury. Despite this, Banwell delivered a great performance to win on 2 rinks skipped by John Wright and Rob Saddler, and lose the other 2. Scores were tied at 64 apiece.

It was Alan Vickery who produced the moment of magic to win the extra end with his last wood. Onwards to the next round!

Parrott shield away to Winscombe, 3rd July

A debut for Bob Grant in the shield, and a win to boot as Captain Chris Wilson won his rink 23-10. it was a big win for skip Phil Villis' team 32-13, and a hard fought win by Skip John Wright's team 19-16. The other two rinks went down by a collective 29 shots. However, this still gave us a lead of 6 shots to take back to our place.

Friendly at home to Ashtead (touring side), 4th July

The team from Ashstead, which is located near Epsom in Surrey, finished their tour at our home. Three mixed triples were played out with Banwell taking the spoils in a closely scored match 52-48.

'A' team at home to Yatton, 6th July

An early start was organised. so that everyone could get back for the England game; it was a 1pm start at home.

It wasn't a brilliant day bowls-wise though, as two rinks skipped by Mal Laycock and John Wright went down by five and six, whilst Hilary Guckian was the only scorer on the day, skipping against old Banwell member Graham Millard in a 24-24 draw.

The overall score was 1-11. At least England won the football....

John Wright

B team away to Winscombe, 6th July

A match debut for new member Richard King and another outing for Bob Grant saw them both win their rinks skipped by Mike Bass and Mac Kirby respectively. The other went down but the work had been done already resulting in a 62-54 win and another 10 points.

The umbrella competition, week 9, 8th July

On to the brave 13 (it would have been 14 but Dave Williams was stolen after Mike Amos went a-wandering).

I say brave because the forecast delivered what had been predicted as non-stop rain all through the evening - soaking everyone. Some liked it so much, they played an extra end.

A hardy lot this bunch.
