It was a risk, cancelling the triples competition a day in advance, but it paid off as Saturday was a complete washout. The storm passed in the early hours of Sunday morning, and by the time teams arrived the weather was fine, with a gentle breeze.
The matches
Eight teams in two groups of four played three games in a round robin event over the course of the day, with the top team in each group progressing to the final, to be held on a later date.
The competition was fierce in the early rounds, but by the time the last games started at 3.15pm, one or two teams seemed to have given up the ghost and lost the will to live. That said, all the games were played with good humour and banter amongst the teams.
The results
The top of the table positions went to Trevor Garfield and the Williams duo of Jenny and Dave, who were on fine form throughout the day, but particularly in the last game and Harold Clarke, Rob Saddler and Pam Gibbons.
The final will be played at 2.30pm on Friday 4th August. Come along and support the teams.
The highlight of the day however has to be the record number of wrong bias by players; it was pleasing to have so much money collected in fines for the Captain's Charity, which this year is MND. We believe that Rob Taylor is now close to the record number of wrong bias in a season - and we still have a few weeks to go!
Well done Rob!
The BBQ
The day finished with the club BBQ. I would like to thank Jim, Purvis, Mike Dolling and Terry Byrnes for their cooking skills, Vicky Guckian, Anne Amos and Chris Laycock for all the food preparation and staffing the bar, and also to those members (Gerry Bean, Mike Nickson, Mal Laycock) who always arrive early to set up the rinks and club house ready for play to commence.
